Playoff Results
Well, we've finished yet another great season, and I believe, one of the best in LCOHA's history!
The A Championship pitted the Regular Season Champs (The Drifters) against the deep roster of the Beer Hounds. Despite a greater than 3 to 1 Power Play advantage, the Beer Hounds were unable to solve Goalie Dennis Casey, the Regular Season (over 5 games) and Playoff Leader in GAA! The game ended in a win for the Drifters of 5 to 1.
The diabolical duo of Greg Bonner & Pat Wrighton for the Drifters combined for 4 points (2 Goals for Bonner and 1 for Wrighton) while cool-headed utility player Glenn 'Woody' Wudrich rallied for 2 goals. Bonner was awarded Player of the Game for the Drifters as was Jeff Hay from the Beer Hounds for being the only one to put one past the Drifters' star goalie, Casey.
The B Championship ended in a 7-2 win for the Falcons, led by another multi-point performance by playoff points leader, Dean Henry. A hat trick by Greg Widrick and 2 goals from Bryce Gibbs sealed the fate of the 'never-give-up' Thrashers. Widrick was awarded Player of the Game for the Falcons, while Jason Verigin earned the honour for the Thrashers who were successful in fending off the Falcons in all but one of their 5 Power Play opportunities.
The first year for stats and playoffs proved to be well-received by the vast majority of players and this will be discussed at a future Team Rep meeting, which I hope to schedule within the next month. Reffing for the season, I believe, was much improved over previous seasons and the League will continue to make all Refs more aware of the rules and expectations of the League as a whole. Due to the great word-of-mouth generated by the many positve changes over the last couple of years, as well as the overall calibre and clean play in our League, there are other Refs now showing interest in becoming involved with the LCOHA, as well as interest from some new teams.
I wish to thank all Team Reps and Refs for their efforts these last couple of seasons in helping to make positive improvements that we now enjoy. I wish to thank the Winfield and Rutland arenas, as well as CARHA. I especially wish to thank all our players who continue to show up and play a clean style of hockey (for the most part) and embody the good sporstmanship that the League is trying so hard to encourage. Thanks, too, to the girlfriends, wives and families, who (we all know it) allow us to go hang with our buds having fun while they ensure things run smoothly at home. This allows us to play the game we all enjoy so much.
I wish everyone a fantastic summer of Beer, BBQ's, Beaching and Boating (and don't forget golfing & wine-drinking)! I hope to see all players and teams and Refs back for next season, which will be even better!
All the best,
Dean Henry
LCOHA President
