Let the Playoffs Begin!

The 'Playoff' Season is now the 'default' season displayed on the site.  Click on 'Schedule' above to see the entire schedule.  To see the 'Regular' Season items, simply select '2011-2012 Regular Season' from the 'Schedule by Season' drop-down window on whatever page you are trying to view.  When the 'Playoffs' end, the Regular Season will then become the 'default' display season once again.  ALL times on the site are accurate and have been confirmed and will NOT be changing any further.  All refs and timekeepers have been arranged and have been made aware of the (potentially) longer games on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

As a reminder, games on Sunday are the normal length.  Any ties will result in an immediate 'Best of 3' shootout, followed by 'Sudden Death' shoot out if necessary.  No player shoots twice until at least all players on one team have shot, meaning the team with more players can start again if desired.  I advise all teams that the rinks may not allow you to stay out any longer and implore you to 'hurry up' should a shootout be necessary on Sunday night.  I will try to give each rink a 'heads-up' should this scenario occur.  I have advised the timekeepers not to put the clock down to 2 minutes unless absolutely necessary.

For Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday games ONLY, we have arranged 1.5 hour ice times.  As a result, all periods will be 15-15-15.  If tied after regular play, there will be a 5 minute 4 on 4 SUDDEN DEATH.  If still tied, then shootout as mentioned above.

We had a very tight ranking at the top of the standings as we had 4 teams within just 3 points of each other!  The Raiders were able to defeat the wiley Beer Hounds for the last game of the season, meaning they leap-frogged over the Drifters to take 3rd.  This kept the Beer Hounds in a tie with the Sabres, meaning a 2nd place finish as the Sabres had one more win, ensuring them the allocation of the top spot as we head into playoffs.  Watch for the Bent Sticks to make a move in the 'B' rankings as they finished with a tie vs. the re-modeled Falcons and managed a win vs. the 'never give up' Brewers!  Don't count the Thrashers out, however.  Their numbers have increased as the season has worn on, their games have been closer, and there are rumours that Dougie "Ogelthorpe" Hamilton will be lacing them up again for the playoffs!!!

For the benefit of the newer players in the League, 'Playoffs' are relatively new for the LCOHA.  Our current format was decided upon in order to allow teams to at least play a couple of additional games for minimal cost and also for some 'bragging rights' after a long and somewhat competitive season.  Teams did not want long, multi-game playoffs and or some kind of 'double knockout' or 'Memorial Cup' format.  With most of these formats, teams that do the best end up with less games.  As all teams pay the same money, and the fact that we want to remain a 'Beer League,' this is how we came up with the current format.

We are of the age that most still enjoy working up a good sweat and thankfully, most players don't take things too seriously (though I still get cross-checked in front of the net from time to time).  This may be for any number of reasons: 1) The offending player don't know any better and don't realize this is a 'BEER League' and we all have to work to go to, and families to attend to (harder to do in a crippled state); 2) They don't know they shouldn't cross-check the President (or any other player for that matter); or, 3) They KNOW it is the President and think I'm a douche-bag!  I tell myself it is probably the 1st reason, though, some of you may disagree...but I digress.

Either way, I ask that everyone rembers that we are all out here for our own reasons, the vast majority of which I believe to be: shoot the shit and have a beverage with the boys, get some much needed stress relief and above all, to have fun. I can tell you that when this League, or hockey in general is no longer FUN, then I (and I suspect most players) won't be lacing them up anymore. I hope everyone has FUN for the last couple of games and I wish you all a GREAT SUMMER!

On a(n almost) final note, I wish to thank all players and team reps, refs and timekeepers, the District of Lake Country and City of Kelowna for helping me to enjoy a great 4 years of running the League.  I wish to also sincerely thank Randy and Blake for stepping up to take over what I know will continue to be a great League into the future.  I'd like to think that things have improved significantly since I have been at the helm and that we are in a good place as the transition of leadership is made.  I've always tried to ensure the League was run democratically and went in the direction the PLAYERS want it to, as voiced by your Team Reps.  I've always felt that the League should develop and mature as a result of the feedback provided by the majority of players.  I feel that this goal was achieved during my tenure and that the League is better for it.   As I've stated earlier, I will help to ensure a smooth transition and will continue to play.

On one last personal note, I wish to thank those of  you who have taken the time to both thank me for my efforts over the past years and also for the well-wishes concerning my wife's deteriorating health.  It is appreciated.  I thought I should post all this now as most players won't be visiting the site very often after the playoffs are over.

All the best to everyone,

Dean
